Adaptive radiation and phylogeny of the mudskippers (Gobiidae : Oxudercinae) were studied in Japan, Malaysia and Inonesia.Isoelectoric focusing electrophoresis and allozyme electrophoresis clarified that Apocryptodon punctatus was most different from other genera and species, but three species of Boleophthalmus, three species of Periophthalmus, Periophthalmodon were comparatively close each other, Among the ten species analyzed, Scartelaos histophorus was collected in Okinawa had rather large genetic distance from the specimes of the same species collected from Indonesia and Malaysia.Karyological analysis clarified that three species of Boleophthalmus had all 46 chromosomes (2n) but karyotypes were different each other, there were at least two types of 2n cromosome number in Periophthalmus species, and Periophthalmus chrysospilos was probably derived species.Field survey on burrows of Periophthalmodon schlosseri clarified that sea water in burrows contained almost no oxygen but gas in the burrows was same as the air. Those gas was probably carried into the burrows by the mudskipper itself.
