農業経済学の対象である食料・農業・農村は、日本経済の成長と国際化を背景として次のような顕著な変化を遂げてきた。第1に、農業と農村の構造変化である。第2に、川上・川下の両面で、農業と関連産業のリンケージが重層化・複雑化しつつある。第3に、食料・農業をめぐる国際的な依存関係が深化しつつある。第4に、農業・農村の持つ多様な非市場的機能が重視されると同時に、後世代への影響に配慮した持続可能な農業が求められるに至っている。さらに第5に、このような食料・農業・農村の変化を受けて、農業政策も理念と手段の転換期を迎えている。農業経済学には、食料・農業・農村をめぐる経済システムの体系的な認識と、わが国並びに世界の食料・農業問題の解決への貢献が求められている。そして、食料・農業・農村の著しい変化はいまあらためて研究対象領域の整序と研究方法の再検討を要請している。以上の時代的要請を受けて、全国の第一線の農業経済学研究者を組織し、農業経済学を23の研究分野に分けて過去の研究をレビューし、今後の研究の方向を明らかにすることを目指し研究を進めた.研究を遂行する過程で、上記に指摘した食料・農業・農村の変化を反映して,各研究部門間の著しい相互関連性が明らかにった。しかしいくどかの個別的な会合と全員による全体討議の結果,当初の研究計画に従った研究分類のもとでレビューを行うことで問題ないことが確認された.分野別の研究レビュー以外に,日本農業経済学会の学会誌である『農業経済研究』に関する分析も行った.まず1975年から現在までの学会誌に掲載されたすべての論文を対象にしたデータベースを作成した.それを用いて,それぞれの論文の研究対象,分析手法,さらに論文内で言及した参考文献について包括的な検討を行った.その結果,農業経済学の歴史的変遷と依拠する経済理論の相互関係がはじめて数量的に確認された.
