This year we demonstrated the following results :(1) A low-temperature-inducible gene (ZmCDPK1) encoding a Ca ion-dependent protein kinase was isolated. Time-course experiment indicates that the low-temperature induction of ZmCDPK1 gene precedes that of mlip15 gene.(2) Cycloheximide (Chx) at sub-inhibitory concentration of protein synthesis elevates the steady-state levels of ZmCDPK1, mlip15 and Adh1 transcripts. Chalcone synthase-coding gene is induced by low temperature, but not by Chx. Among 8 other drugs including actinomycin D and puromycin, only anisomycin showed identical effect on the expression of above four genes with Chx.(3) Involvement of Caion in the induction process by low temperature and by Chx is suggested.(4) Transgenic tobacco plants in which tbz17 gene is constitutively expressed are produced. These plants showed an altered morphology compared with the plants transformed with the control vector.
