古墳時代の豪族居館を構成する建物は,東日本からは竪穴住居も見つかっているが,西日本では掘立柱建物がほとんど検出されている。掘立柱建物には大型で庇をもつ中心建物とそれに付属する大小の建物,倉庫などがある。これらは平地式のほかに,高床式のものがあったことがわかる。古墳時代の建物を表現した家形埴輪には,中心に置かれた主屋,後屋の建物,それらに付属する脇屋,あるいは付属屋,納屋(霊屋?)などの建物がある。また,倉庫には切妻造りと四柱造り,入母屋造りのものがあり,いずれも平屋と高床のものがある。これらの家形埴輪のうち,楼閣状の家形埴輪の性格が問題になる。楼閣建物は奈良県佐味田宝塚古墳の絵画にも,平地建物と高床建物が描かれている。これらは主屋と後屋を表現したものと想定される。楼閣の家形埴輪は四面に入り口,窓が設けられているので,後屋の埴輪と強い共通性をもつ点が注意される。ほかに,家形埴輪には片流れの屋根をもつ高床の建物があるなど,なお性格が明らかでない建物もある。さらに,豪族居館遺構には屋敷地を囲む棚(塀)が巡らされたものが多い。家形埴輪にもこの棚(塀)に関連するものとみなされる囲形埴輪が共伴するものが少なくない。この囲形埴輪の性格も,なお明らかでないが,兵庫県行者塚古墳,愛知県経ケ峰古墳では,この中に家形埴輪が一個だけ置かれて出土した例がある。形態と出土状態をあわせて考えると,囲形埴輪は棚(塀)と門を表現したものとみてよい。そして,囲形埴輪をともなうことからも家形埴輪は豪族(首長)居館の建物が製作されたことも明らかであろう。
