風景等の写真をスキャナーによりデジタル画像に変換した。これらの原画像に対し、低彩度領域の無彩色化、高彩度領域の彩度強調、高輝度色の白色シフト、低輝度色の黒色シフト、中域彩度領域の色差強調、明度区間伸張などの処理を組み合わせた色調修正処理を施した。各処理の程度を5段階に変えた変換画像と原画像とを管面色校正されたCRTモニタにランダムな順で呈示し、10人の被験者(大学生)に評価させた。“自然な"という印象評定は、原画像と色修正程度の小さな画像で高く、大きく色修正したものでは、“不自然な"という印象が高くなった。しかし“美しい"、“きれい"、“好ましい"等の印象評定は、中程度の色修正を施した画像で高く、“美しい"という印象が必ずしも“自然"であることを必要とせず、“不自然な"ものでも適切な色修正がされていれば“美しい"と判断されることが示せた。また、印象評定に最も大きな影響を及ぼすのは、高彩度領域の彩度強調処理であり、画像中の原色領域が“美しい"という印象と関連の深いことが確認できた。さらに、彩度強調処理は、自然画像が絵画化された印象を与え、“不自然"であるが“きれい"な画像となる傾向が認められた。白黒のメリハリを強調するような処理は、観察してその処理の有無を判別することは容易であるが、印象評定との明確な関連は得られなかった。また、高輝度色の白色シフトや低輝度色の黒色シフトについては“好ましい"とされる色修正の程度が画像によって大きく異なり、特に、明暗の強調は、画像内の部分ごとの個別処理の必要性が感じられた。これらの処理を、実際の写真調色の自動化に適用するためには、どの部分の明暗を強調しどの部分を原画のままとするかといった対象の指定方法、さらに、それらの境界をいかに自然で目立たないものとするかといった後処理の方法についても検討を重ねる必要がある。
