本研究の先行調査として、小学校教師21名を対象に死生観とデス・エデュケーションの必然性への考え方について、また小学校5、6年生担任教師17名を対象に性教育の意義についての半構成的なアンケート調査を実施した。死生観に関連して死について考えた経験の有無を尋ねたところ、「ある」が18名、「ない」が3名であった。その経験した場面の内訳(複数回答)をみると、「家族・友人など身近な人の死から考えた」が11名、「人生経験から考えた」が5名、「自分の親の年齢から考えた」が3名、、その他で、自己の死生観の形成とこれまで受けてきた学校教育との関係を示す答えはなかった。教育の必然性の有無については、「あり」が17名、「なし」が3名、「わからない」が1名であった。「あり」の理由は、「子どもは死という言葉をよく使うが理解できていない」が8名、「子どもは生命の大切さを知らない」が4名、その他であったが、人を叩いたり傷つけたりする子どもについて家庭問題を指摘する回答もあり、家庭内での子どもの立場とこころの問題との絡みを考慮すべきという意見もあった。18名の教師はすでに死の教育に関連した教育的指導を「行っている」と答えていたが、その内容は「生命の大切さを日常の生活指導場面で話す」がほとんどで、今回の調査では死の概念形成過程に合わせて計画的に教育を行っている教師はいなかった。一方、性教育の意義に関する調査でも共通の教育目的は「生命の大切さ」であった。性教育の場合は、その教育を遅くとも小学校低学年までに開始して、発達段階に応じて継続的に行う必要があると考えていた。今回の先行調査結果から、教師は性教育と同時にデス・エデュケーションの必要性を認めているが、その実践には消極的である。従って、子どもは死に対して恐れなどの不快な感情を持ったり疑問を抱いた場合に、その答えを求めにくい教育的環境に置かれていることが示唆される。
