本研究は、若年夫婦家族における「性別による生活領域の分化」の程度、「世帯外分業ネットワーク」の実態、「夫婦間におけるパートナーシップ」の規範構造を明らかにするために、次のような作業を実施した。まずパイロット・サーベイとして神奈川県下に在住する夫婦またはいずれか一方の延べ20ケースについてインタビューによる質的調査(平成6年10〜12月)を行い、当事者のリアリティにおける夫婦間の倫理的役割やそれに対する役割距離がパフォーマンスとして表出される機会を探索した。調査対象の夫婦家族の多くは、持家・賃貸を含めマンション住まいにより、個人的な生活空間の絶対的な広がりを欠いており、その結果夫婦間には顕在的・潜在的なストレスを抱えていた。家事分担など性別役割の内容には世帯差・個人差があり、新たな知見は見られないが、夫婦間の規範形成が、家族内の役割分業それ自体ではなく、むしろストレスの相互回避をはかることに主たる目的をおく傾向が見られ、具体的に時間的・空間的な距離化を図ることにより夫婦間の緊張緩和を双方向的、あるいは一方向に実行している姿が見られた。この質的調査の結果を踏まえ、冒頭であげた3つの視点を含めた質問紙を作成し、神奈川県相模原市の26〜35歳の既婚女性を対象にした郵送法による量的調査(平成7年2月末)を実施した。なおこの質問紙調査は、現在、回収・集計中である。量的な調査データは今後統計的に処理をし、その成果を論文・学会報告で公表する予定である。
