御回在は本山である大阪市平野区の大念佛寺の本尊十一尊天得如来の画像をもって本末寺の檀家を廻るものだが、各家で開帳・回向をおこなうほか、本尊の掛け軸そのもので信者の背中をさする御祓いも同時におこなわれている。回向には、一統がかりから三統がかり、立回向までのランクづけがなされており、信者より出される布施の額により、回向をおこなう僧侶の数や格が異なったり、あるいは画像を開帳することなく床の間に立てかけたまま回向するなどのシステムとなっている。回在に用いられる本尊画像には河内回在仏・大和回在仏の2幅があるように、本山の回在には河内回在・大和回在のほか大阪回在があるが、今回の調査では秋に執行される大和回在の回檀地域のうち宇陀郡榛原町、橿原市、桜井市、大和郡山市の各一部を調査地域とした。聞き取りを中心に調査を進めたが、本研究課題の目的のひとつである農事暦と回在の結びつきについては十分な伝承が得られなかった。この理由としては榛原町萩原地区が宿場・商店街であったこと、先行研究である元興寺文化財研究所の報告からもある程度の年月が経過していることによる伝承の希薄化が考えられる。また調査のなかで融通念仏宗寺院の各村落での位置づけに注意すべきことに気づかされた。村内に寺が1か寺の場合と他宗派寺院と複数ある場合で、行事に注意を向ける住民の割合や意識に違いがみられると思われる。本山の回在では村内の檀家のうち数軒を廻るのみであることも、住民の認知度に影響していると考えられる。大和七か大寺に数えられる榛原町の宗祐寺は、榛原本山と称するように吉野町、榛原町、桜井市に檀家約千軒を持ち、独自に回在行事をおこなっている。本山と宗祐寺の二重の回在を受ける地域では、ふたつの回在をどのように認識しているのか十分な検討ができなかったが、今後、同地域を中心に調査を継続したい。
