補助金の交付が7月にづれこんだこともあって、現在までのところ、14世紀の「公方」の用例を中心に「公庭」「公儀」などの用例を収集・整理し、これをデータベースに入力する作業が中心となり、そのデータの十分な分析にいたっていないが、概略以下のような知見がえられている。「公方」用例が記された文書の形式は、「譲状」「売券」「寄進状」などのような契状類、書状類などのいわゆる私文書が多く、室町幕府や朝廷に提出された文書では「申状」「陳状」「請文」などの上申文書類などが中心である。この点から「権力側から特定の意図を以てこの呼称を使用した」とは南北朝期になってもいえない。しかし南北朝合体後の明徳四年(1393)になると「下知状」という下達文書に幕府の自称として記されるようになる点に変化が見られる。「公方」に期待された機能は、譲与や寄進などの「契約保証」であり、その違反の場合の強制執行や科罪の主体である点は鎌倉時代と変わらない。上級裁判権、年貢公事の賦課主体である点も同様だが、南北朝期になると、恩賞給与や安堵さらには軍勢催促、軍忠認定の主体としても記されるようになる。総じて応安年間(1368-1375)頃から機能の拡大が認められる。また、このころから「公方さま」など将軍個人の別称としても「公方」が使用されるようになり、鎌倉時代末期以来の公方の用法に大きな変化が認められる。以上、「公方」用例を中心に南北朝期の「公」観念の変化についての今年度の研究の概要を記したが、今後詳細な分析によって「公」観念の変化を総合的に提示したい。
