本研究では、東北地方の晩期縄文土器の成立を、従来のように地域内での自立的な変化の結果としてのみ捉えず、広く東日本全域の土器作り技術体系の中で理解すべきとの視点に立ち、後期末・晩期初頭の縄文土器の型式学的検討を行った。これまでの研究成果は次の通りである。1.これまでに実態がよく判らないままに、斉一性ばかりが強調されてきた縄文時代後期後葉コブ付土器群に明確な地域性が見られることを明らかにした。この地域性は、基本的に各地の晩期縄文土器に引き継がれると考えられる。2.東北南部では、在地のコブ付土器に混じって中部高地系と考えられる異系統の土器や、技術複合型のいわゆる「折衷土器」が存在していることが判った。「折衷土器」に分類される土器は予想以上に多く、また技術交流は、土器の極めて細かな属性にも及んでいるにも関わらず、1で指摘した地域性が失われることはない。3.宮城県七ヶ浜町に所在する沢上貝塚出土土器の整理を行い、コブ付土器の終末から晩期初頭の土器型式の変遷を層位的に捉えることができた。沢上貝塚には、層位的・型式学的に「大洞B2式」に併行すると考えられる土器群が存在するが、この土器群は、従来「大洞B2式」と説明されてきた土器群とは異なる内容を持っている。今後、コブ付土器と共伴する異系統土器、他地域との折衷土器や、東北地方以外の地域で出土する東北系土器を媒介として、東日本全体を対象に後期後葉から晩期初頭の広域編年を整備する必要がある。さらに異系統土器、折衷土器に関して類型化を図り、既に東日本の各地域で研究の蓄積のある、東北地方晩期縄文土器(「亀ヶ岡式土器」)の搬入、模倣の実態と比較し、地域間交流の推移を明らかにしたい。
