古墳時代の銅鏡の中でも重要と考えられる内行花文鏡、方格規矩四神鏡類を主な検討の対象とした。中国製方格規矩四神鏡については、すでに詳細な研究がなされており、倣製方格規矩四神鏡との比較検討が可能であった。倣製内行花文鏡については、初期の作品に関して中国製内行花文鏡とほぼ同様の鏡背分割技法が用いられていると考えられた。新しい時期のものになるにつれ鏡背分割技法は中国製のものとかけ離れたものになり、最終的には連弧文をコンパスで描かない簡略なものまで製作されるようになっている。倣製方格規矩四神鏡についても、初期の作品については、中国製方格規矩四神鏡とほぼ同様の鏡背分割技法が用いられており、これも新しい時期のものになるにつれ、中国鏡の鏡背分割技法と異なったものになる傾向が認められた。鏡背分割そのものは、コンパス状工具と定規があれば可能であることが今回の研究で再確認された。しかし、弥生時代に見られる鏡背分割とは明らかに異質なもので、倣製鏡に見られる中国鏡との鏡背分割技法の一致は、現状では日本列島内でその技法が模倣されたということを考えるだけではなく、少なくとも初歩的な幾何学を理解した渡来人の存在を考えねばならないものと思われる。今後は、渡来工人による製作の可能性が指摘されている三角縁神獣鏡においても同様の鏡背分割技法の検討を行い、三角縁神獣鏡以外の倣製鏡とどの様な関係にあるか解明していくつもりである。
