(1)知識層での節用集の利用状況 江戸時代の随筆・地誌・考証・小説などの資料で、節用集を引用・参照した例を収集した結果、現段階では、『和漢音釈書言字考節用集』(享保2〈1717〉刊)の利用が目立った。節用集の一つとして「字を知るために」使われことがある一方で、本書では、注記が豊富なため、そこに盛られた知識を導入・援用するものがあったことが注目された。(2)村における節用集の利用者層 現代に作られた村役人層の文書目録によるかぎり、さして多くが存在するわけではないことが知られた。これは、文書中の書籍が現代にいたる間に処分された(古書籍商などでの商品価値が古分書よりも高いため)ことなどにもよることが考えられる。一方で、中農層でも盛んに利用されたことを示す資料も見いだされた(高橋敏『近世村落生活文化史序説』、田中圭一『柴田収蔵日記』など)。厳密な意味では、今後、そのような文献によって文書目録の欠を補いうるような方法論を編み出す必要が当面の課題となることが明らかになった。また、この調査の過程で、近世農村における識字率などに触れる必要が起こり、それに関わる資料も収集することができた。そのような資料と、本研究で予定していた資料とを合わせることによって、農村の言語生活と節用集との関わりについて、問題提起として発表できる程度の段階にいたることができた。しかし、今後、より一層の資料の収集と充実が必要である。(3)現存節用集にける旧蔵者の書き込み 現在までのところ、役職・居住地・年齢などから、ある一定の傾向を導き出せるような資料量に達しておらず、今後の収集如何にかかる面が多いことが知られた。
