一定規模(80m)以上の前方後円墳についての測量図を収集し、個別の前方後円墳について築造規格を復元する作業を進めている。その上で、今年度の検討対象である、古墳時代中期の代表的な築造規格である、誉田御廟山型と大仙型である可能性が高いものについて、標式的な巨大古墳の測量図と比較し、その判定を行なった。以上の作業によって、確認できた成果は次の2点である。1、まず、この二つのタイプが、それぞれ標式となる巨大古墳を頂点として、規模の上で1/2や1/3という格差をもちながら、各地で築造されていることを確認した。誉田御廟山型については、これまでにも指摘があったが、今回の作業で該当する新たな前方後円墳を数多く確認した。一方の大仙型の場合は、これまで先行研究があまりなく、今回の作業で大仙古墳を頂点とし、全国に多くの同規格墳が存在することを確かめたのは大きな成果である。2、これら二つのタイプの前方後円墳が各地でどのように現われるのか、一定の見通しをえた。すなわち、中期前葉には、各地でつくられた大型古墳の多くは誉田御廟山型であったが、中期中葉を境に大仙型に推移する現象がかなり認められ、またその築造主体は中期前葉のそれとは異なる地域集団と考えられる場合が多い。両者は微妙に時期的なずれをもって現われ、かつ各地での勢力交替を反映するものであるらしい。この現象は中央の巨大古墳群の趨勢とも合致するようである。つまり、各地のこうした現象は、誉田御廟山型をかかえる古市古墳群の中期前葉における隆盛と、中期中葉にはむしろ大仙古墳をかかえる百舌鳥古墳群がそれにとってかわる現象と関連すると予想されるのである。これは古墳時代における王権のあり方とも関連するであろう。今後、各地域における事例を積み重ねるとともに、中央と地方での連動現象についての背景を探ることが重要な課題となる。
