本研究の目的は、『新河竹黙阿弥全集』(仮題)の編集・刊行をにらんで、河竹黙阿弥作の台本本文を詳細に検討することにあった。歌舞伎台本は写本の形で現存するのが原則で、再演毎に子の写本、孫の写本を生む可能性がある。その際生じた本文の異同が、上演側の都合によるのか、単なる筆写ミスか、あるいは作者黙阿弥自身の意図によるのか、判断が難しい。本研究では、作品点数の諸本を対校することで、内部微証から底本・対校本を選定する際の原則を導き出す作業を試みた。申請時には、次の5作品を調査研究の対象とした。1「夢結蝶鳥追」 2「蔦紅葉宇都谷峠」 3「江戸桜清水清玄」 4「勧善懲悪覗機関」 5「傾城曽我廓亀鑑」このうち、1・5については、最良質の台本である早大演博本が虫損のため撮影できず、調査の対象から除外せざるを得なかった。2については、新たに早大演博本の底本候補が発見されたのが収穫できる。これも虫損が甚だしく、細かい対校は修復作業を待っておこなう。しかし他の諸本のうち、底本候補・対校本候補についてはほとんど閲覧・複写・翻刻の作業が完了している。本研究の特徴の一つは、黙阿弥存生中に刊行された活字本を視野にいれることである。版権(著作権)取得のため出版された明治の〈演劇脚本〉を調査したところ、省略部分が多く、底本候補にはならないが、現『黙阿弥全集』編纂の際に校訂者がカットした部分が残っているなど、対校の参考になることがわかった。また、読売新聞掲載の活字本は、4の「勧善懲悪覗機関」以外の作品は、底本候補となることがわかった。本研究の成果の公表については別紙を参照されたい。
