本年度研究は、過去3年間の研究の延長線上にある。つまり2つの問い、(1)項構造が持つべき情報は何か、(2)統語論・形態論における項構造の働きは何か、の答えを探るものであった。(1)に対しては、主題素性が項構造の情報であるとした。具体的な主題役ラベルを用いずに、素性値の+/-で項の特性を規定しようと、4つの素性を提案した。こうすることで、従来の項構造以上の一般化を、主題素性により得られると考える。具体的には、この主題素性による項構造をもとに、4つの説明をこころみた((2)に対する試み)。一つめは主題素性の値により、主題階層を作成し、項の割り振り(外項/内項の決定)を説明した。二つめは主題素性の値により、他動性(TR)を算出した。他動性の度合いを素性値に求め、進行形、脱主題構文(受動態、able形容詞、中間態構文、能格構文)の入力動詞を制約した。他動性(TR)を用いた説明は今後、There構文を含む存在構文、seem/appear/persuadeの補部、派生名詞、疑似分裂文,do so/do what構文,small clause,for one's sakeなど、射程を広げる可能性をはらんでいる。三つめは主題素性の素性値による、構文の制約である。項または特定の位置を、素性値により制約するもので、命令形がこの方法で説明された。素性値制約は、派生名詞句の指定辞位置の説明に拡大できる可能性がある(cf.Rozwadowska(1988))。四つめは、照合による制約である。副詞類と項が、素性の一致/不一致により制約されることを、2種類の副詞でみた。中間構文と副詞(cf.緒方 1993)、副詞同士の共起関係、副詞同士の位置関係/語順も射程に入れる可能性がある。以上示したように本助成による研究は、主題階層の可能性と方向性をさぐり、いくつかの具体例を示すものになった。この主題素性は、有効に使われることで、より広くより深くより簡潔に説明する能力を持つと考えている。
