本研究では古代エジプト新王国時代のマルカタ王宮から出土した彩画片の復原を試みるとともに、同時代に属する類例遺構との比較をおこない、当王宮における建築装飾の様相に関する知見をより豊富に得た。成果の概要を以下にまとめて記す。1、マルカタ王宮内に位置する主王宮には、規模をほぼ同じくする大きな寝室が2つあり(「王の寝室」と「B室」)、どちらにも王名が天井面に記されているため、両者がアメンヘテプ3世のための部屋であることは明らかである。ひとつの王宮内に2つの寝室が存在する例は今まで知られておらず、古代エジプトにおける王宮建築の役割を知る上で貴重であり、今後、マルカタ王宮の増築過程に関する分析を踏まえながら、さらに詳しい考察を進めることが望まれる。類例遺構であるアマルナ王宮は、王のための住居というよりもむしろ公的な儀式を執り行うための施設であると近年ではみなされており、王が実際に住居していたと従来まで考えられてきたマルカタ王宮の性格についても、広い見地からの再確認が必要である。2、「王の寝室」の天井面には通風窓が開けられていたという通説は、おそらくは誤りであることが天井彩画の復原から明らかとなった。彩画モティーフから、天井全面は平坦で彩色がなされていたと推定される。通風窓は、壁面の天井近くの高位置に存在していたと思われ、いくつか発見された隅角部の断片は、この窓を構成していた一部であると考えられる。通風窓は木製で、必要な時には閉めることができた扉も備えられていたであろう。3、「B室」から出土した彩画片が少量であったために、この部屋における建築装飾の復原は困難であるが、天井面の彩色に関してはほぼ「王の寝室」と同一であったことが知られた。しかしこの部屋の通風窓については、「王の寝室」と異なった彩色がなされていた可能性があり、「王の寝室」からはまったく出土しなかった古代エジプト建築特有のモールディング片も見つかっている。さらに詳細な分析を進め、「王の寝室」と 「B室」との性格の相違を解明することが待たれる。
