The cooperative research project-between Kyoto and Yonsei Universities on "Magnetostratigraphic Study for the Lower Gyeongsang Super Group in Goryeong-Uiryeong Area" was carried out in 1996 as the Oversea Scientific Research Project (Join Research) of Japan No. 07044306 financially supported by the Ministry of Education/Science, Sports and Culture of Japan and KOSEF in Korea.The Gyeongsang Basin is a part of non-marine sedimentary basin in East Asia which formed during the Cretaceous and Neogene. The basin, being exposed between the Gyeongsang basin and Hida-Sangun-Yamaguchi area in Japan, has been noticed by the both the Japanese and Korean geologists. Although a number of investigations, there are debeates on such as the times of deposition. This magnetostratigraphic study has been carried out in Gyeongsang Supergroup.Field examination and collection of paleomagnetic samples were made in Southern part of Korea from February 29 to March 19, 1996, in cooperative work with the collaborators of Japanese and Korean scientists, as follows :Jinju Area (Cretaceous) : 52 sites (about 260 rock samples)Goryeong Area (Cretaceous) : 56 sites (about 280 rock samples)Pohang Area (Tertiary) : 40 sites (about 400 rock samples)The laboratory and summarizing works will be done in Kyoto and Yonsei Universities.Detailed and careful rock magnetic and paleomagnetic studies may give the ages and the pole position of the sampling sites. And then, it is clear that the times of deposition, stratigraphic correlations among different sub-basins of Gyeongsang basin and polar wander path of Cretaceous and Tertiary periods for the Southern part of Korean Peninsula, in close association with that for Southwest Japan.The study may enable us to determine the time of deposition and correlate among formations included in each basins. The results will provide the foundermental informations on the time of formations, paleomagnetic polar wander path in East Asia.
