平成7年度以降、三ヵ年にわたって「琉球風俗画」の調査および研究をおこなった。このなかで、「琉球風俗画」の中にこれまで知られていなかった資料ををいくつか加えることができた。新出資料のうちもっとも重要なものは『宮良長延坐像』である。中国の西洋写実画の系譜をくむ技法であるという絵画史上の価値に加えて、石垣島の頭職の風俗を考える上で重要である。またこの肖像画は、戦争で焼失した第二尚氏歴代の肖像画である「御後絵(うぐえ)」を復元する際に欠くことのできない資料となりうる。同じく新出のジュリ(尾類)という那覇・辻の娼婦を描いた風俗画は、高級娼婦の姿を知る資料としてのみならず、八重山の「うやんまあ」を描いた風俗画とならんで琉球美人画の代表作としても高く評価されるものであろう。こうした新出資料のほかに、『那覇港貿易図屏風』のような大画面に描かれている士族や平民のさりげない描写のなかに、多くの文化要素が抽出でき、それが描かれた時期の風俗を考える重要な資料となり得ることを確認しえた。現存する「琉球風俗画」はいくつかの伝写系統にまとめることができる。そしてそのなかには18世紀を遡る作品は存在しないといっていい。理由のひとつに戦争がある。沖縄戦のなかで失われた文化財は数多くあるが、絵画も焼失文化財のひとつに加えられる。そしていまひとつの理由は、18世紀以前にはかかる風俗画を必要としなかったのではないかというものである。「琉球風俗画」の研究の最大の成果は、この種絵画の内在する問題点の確認にあったといって過言ではない。そして、まさにそれ故に、琉球絵画史というひとつの研究分野を開拓する可能性を見い出したし、風俗研究資料としても欠くべからざる存在であることを指摘しえた。しかし、ともかく研究の緒にはついたのである。
