The aim of this report is to present the findings of a research project carried out by a team from Nihon University on the procedures and results involved in the use of self-conducted health check-ups, using appropriate apparatus. It is hoped that this system will result in savings in time and expense for the Health Service and the general public alike, as well as an improvement in quality and availability of treatment. At present, there are a large number of borderline cases in need of the kind of awareness and consciousness-raising that can be provided by self-checking methods using compact medical apparatus. One of the priorities of this project is to assess the extent to which the attitude of these people is affected by any resulting change in lifestyle and how effective such methods could be in combating and preventing illness.The first stage of the project was to inform subjects of the procedure involved in carrying out the checks. In the case of a group of junior high-school students, they were first instructed in the method of testing urine samples, using a substitute solution so as to ensure their right to privacy. The students then passed on the information to their parents, and both students and parents began to self-administer the check-up, using authentic samples of their own urine.In the case of adult sufferers from diabetes, they were issued with apparatus to measure the level of blood sugar, so that they could make regular checks, which provided important back-up information when they paid periodical visits to a health-service doctor.Renal self-checking procedures resulted in significant cost-benefit improvements when applied in the case of adults and elementary and junior high-school subjects. A striking improvement in awareness and attitude was observable on the part of these subjects. Towards maintaining their sound state of health, or taking a more active part in their own recovery.
