The results obtained from the present research are summarized as follows.(1) In order to apply the photothermal method to measure the thermal diffusivity of functional gradient materials (FGM), we have extended the RG theory and obtained AC temperature response for layred sample.(2) From the obtained AC temperature response, we have succeeded to evaluate thermal diffusivity distribution in the case of 2 and 3 layred FGM sample. We have found that by employing appropriate initial values, it is in principle possible to extract the inner thermal diffusivity distribution from phase-lag data.(3) We have developed a new photoacoustic instrument and confirmed the applicability of the method.(4) In order to measure the thermal diffusivity distribution of much thicker (-mm) FGM,we have developed a new photothermal instrument.(5) By using this photothermal apparatus, we have measured the thermal diffusivity distribution of 5 layred Ni/ZrO_2 FGM sample for the first time.
