项目摘要

この研究課題の主な目的は、修道院文化の形成をヨーロッパ成立期に求めたことでる。そしてこの点では一応の成果をみることが出来たのではないかと思う。これまで学会誌に発表してきた主なテーマは、次のようなものである。「ベネディクトゥスの回心」「グレゴリウス一世の人と思想」「カロリング・ルネサンスにおける礼拝と文化」「修道院と労働のエイトース」「修道院における人間像」「中世修道院文化の教父的源泉」「施与雑考クリュニ-修道院創建文書を中心に」「クリュニ-修道院とシト-修道院の成立」などである。その他、ここ数年間に発表したものに『修道院禁欲と観想の中世』講談社現代新書と『修道院にみるヨーロッパの心』山川出版社がある。また翻訳ではあるが「祈りかつ働け(Ora et Labora):ベネディクト会のモット-か」を月刊誌『みすず』みすず書房に三回にわたって発表した。従来、中世ヨーロッパの文化は、「スコラ哲学」を中心に主に古代末期の聖アウグスティヌスと十三世紀の聖トマス・アクィナスの哲学と思想を中心に行われてきた。ここに取上げた「修道院文化」の時代は、「プレ・スコラ学」の取るに足らないものとして見なされ、したがって、「修道院は古代文化の担い手として古代の学問と教養の伝統を保存・継承して後のスコラ学の発展を促す単に橋渡しする役割を演じて来た」と見なされて来たのである。従って、この研究ではこのような過渡期の未熟な文化として評価する立場から独自の個性的な文化として、つまり「修道院文化」の形成期として極めて創造的な独自の文化を有し、ヨーロッパの形成期に重要な役割を果たしてきたことを明らかにするものである。
