今回の研究では、構築した動画像データベースを利用して、歯肉縁下細菌叢の運動量と歯周疾患との関連性を以下の様な方法で確かめることができた。画像サイズが大きくなるほど、また高画質にするほど画像ファイルサイズを大きくなるため、まず画像取り込みの最適条件を求めた。運動量を正確にとらえるためには、320×240ピクセルの画像の大きさが必要であることから、動画像をこの大きさで10秒間非圧縮で取り込んだところ、ファイルサイズは約20Mバイトとなった。そこで検索・参照のための動画像と運動量を測定するための画像を分けて取り込むこととした。前者は160×120ピクセルで30秒間取り込んだところ、1動画像あたり2.5Mバイトとなった。これをカルテ番号や各種の臨床パラメータと組み合わせデータベース化した。後者は320×240ピクセルとし、約10秒間1秒ごとに10枚の静止画像で取り込んだところ、10枚で2.5Mバイトとなった。これを画像処理ソフトで処理し、運動量を算出した。今回購入したハードディスクには、動画像、10枚の静止画像および運動量の算出結果を、それぞれ関連づけて保存した。現在、延べ患者数約100人、約100動画像、約350Mバイトを蓄積している。また、典型的な画像の何例かをネットワーク上で公開しており、クイックタイムム-ビ-形式で閲覧可能としている。(URL:http://prevent.dent.osaka-u.ac.jp./prevent/bac/bac.html)運動量(画素数)と臨床パラメータ(歯肉炎指数・歯垢指数・出血の有無・排膿の有無・ポケットの深さ)との関係を分析してみたところ、歯周症状と運動量の関連性が示唆された。すなわち、出血・排膿の有無では、画素数に有意に差があったが、歯肉炎指数・歯垢指数では差がなかった。ポケットの深さと画素数との間には、正の相関性が認められた。
