無作為抽出された矯正治療の既往がない日本大学松戸歯学部学生93人(男性71人、女性22人、平均年齢24才8か月)を対象に、口腔筋機能と歯列弓形態について口腔模型、口腔周囲筋の動きを撮影したビデオ映像および問診表により調査した。調査した項目は、性別、安静時の口唇の姿勢位、安静時の舌尖および舌中央部の位置、顎関節雑音および顎関節部疼痛の有無、嘔吐反射の強弱、リップメーターによる口唇力の測定値、10秒間で発音できる「プ」「ル」「プル」のそれぞれの回数およびリズム、リスピングの有無、上顎第1小臼歯および第1大臼歯部の口蓋幅径、下顎第1小臼歯および第1大臼歯部の歯列弓幅径である。これらの項目の関連性を統計処理し、検討した結果は次の通りである。下顎第1大臼歯部歯列幅径および口唇力に性差(男性が大)を認めた。発音のリズムの不安定な人は安定している人より、「プル」の発音回数が少なく、口唇力が弱かった。10秒間で発音できる「プ」「ル」「プル」の回数はそれぞれお互いに相関を有していたが、口唇力との関係はいずれも認められなかった。口唇力と口蓋・歯列幅径の間には相関がなく、10秒間で発音できる「プ」「ル」「プル」の回数と口蓋・歯列幅径の間にも相関が認められなかった。しかし、安静時に舌中央部が口蓋と接している人は接していない人より上顎第1小臼歯部の口蓋幅径が大きかった。以上のことより、口唇力、口唇の運動能力、口蓋・歯列幅径はそれぞれお互いに関連性の少ない独立した因子であり、口蓋の幅径に安静時の舌の位置が関与していることが示唆された。
