これまでの都市群システムのモデルは,単一かつ規則的な発展パターンを導くものがほとんどであった。そのようなモデルによって現実の都市群システムを説明しようとするとき,当該地域がたどってきた特定の歴史や,都市成立の背景となる特定の場所というものが,単なる付随的な条件として軽んじられてしまう。これは均質空間を前提とする古典的立地論の弱点である。そこで本研究では,アレンとサングリエの自己組織化モデルを拡張し,わが国の各地域における多様な都市群の発展型を説明することを目ざした。第1に,都市群システムの自己組織化モデルをパソコン上でシミュレートするために,数学解析およびグラフ描画ソフトを購入してプログラミングを行った。第2に,大都市圏型,単一中心型,多極分散型,海岸型,盆地型,平野型などの類型に従って,都市発達の歴史の資料を収集した。研究の結果,次のようなことを明らかにした。まず大都市圏型の都市発達においては,明治初期における歴史的所与に加えて,規模の経済と外部経済性が大きな役割をはたしたが,地方圏の場合には,歴史的所与で有利であったとしても,それが規模の経済を生み出すほどの閾値を越えないと単一中心型の都市群システムができあがる。さらに競合する有力な都市が複数あった地域では,県庁の立地において政治的な妥協が行われるために多極分散型となりやすい。これらに自然的所与を付け加えることで,日本各地の多様な都市群システムの発展が説明できると考えられる。
