I and investigaters have collected about 15,000 folk place names. or in Saga dialect, "shikona, "in the Saga plains by intervewing farmers of 700 villages.subsection place names of villages in Saga Prefecture were adopted during the land tax refrom of 1873-1881. Shikonas, on the other hand, have been historical place names sometimes seen in historical documents.Now that the shikonas are mapped and available they are usuful as a material for history studies : the shikonas made it possible to reconstruct jori land division system and medieval manor villages.Eor example ; 1) shikonas related to tsubo, a unit of jori system, have made it possible to reconstruct jori system of each county, 2) manor shikonas such as "Yojaku", or farmland managed directly by a manor lord, tell us field reclaiming processes, 3) thanks to shikonas and historical documens, it came to light that the ao or fresh-water-on-tide irrigation arcas of present-day were aiso watered by ao irrigation even during the medieval period, and 4) we can also reconstruct modern villages by means of shikonas related to gates, feudal lord's notice boards, gunpowder storages, etc.I have thus attained my objects, and compiled shikonas as a new material for history studies.
