Soundscape Design in Cultural Information Centers

The final purpose of this study is to improve the acoustic environment in libraries and to construct the model of the desirable acoustic environment in libraries, based on the theory of soundscape and soundscape design. Before that, it is important to clarify the exist acoustic environment of the facilities.(1) Therefore the author investigated the exist acoustic environment of the libraries and the acoustic environmental awareness of librarians by questionnaire, focussing on the public libraries in Saitama and Yamanashi prefectures.(2) Next, the author investigated the acoustic environmental awareness of library users by questionnaire. The results of this survey are discussed from (1) the desirable acoustic environment of libraries, (2) the sound from the outside of the libraries, (3) the acoustic environment of the inside of the libraries, and (4) the environmental music in the libraries.(3) Next, the author investigated the exist acoustic environment of the libraries and the acoustic environmental awareness of librarians by questionnaire, focussing on the public libraries in 11 prefectures all over Japan. The results of this survey are discussed from 3 aspects : (1) the sound from the outside of the libraries and measures for the undesired sound, (2) the sound from the inside of the libraries and measures for the undesired sound, and (3) the environmental music in the libraries.
