本研究においては、釜ヶ崎を中心とした全国の各「寄せ場」を都市下層社会として捉え、それらが直面している問題を明らかにしようと試みました。この研究を通じて、以下のことが明らかになりました。まず、その一つは、戦後、1960年初頭から始まる「寄せ場」人口の単身男性者化の原因は、これまで行政が家族世帯に対して優先的な福祉製作を行った結果だとされてきましたが、行政的資料などを検証した結果、当時の行政対策の規模は、とても「寄せ場」人口の男性単身化を促進するほど大きなものではないことが明らかになりました。むしろ、この「寄せ場」人口の単身男性化は、日本社会の産業構造や労働市場、そして家族関係と関連があるのでないか、という仮説が浮かび上がってきました。その二つ目は、大阪・釜ヶ崎、東京・山谷、横浜・寿町、名古屋・笹島の各「寄せ場」の現状が、同じ「寄せ場」であってもかなり異なる形態(ドヤの形状や外国人労働者の存在など)にあるということです。これらは、各「寄せ場」の歴史的変遷をふまえた上での調査研究の必要性を感じました。三番目として、これは、各「寄せ場」が共通に直面している問題ですが、現在、「寄せ場」は日雇労働者の就労場所、日雇労働者の街から次第に棄民化された「高齢者の街」へと急速に変容しつつあります。現在の「寄せ場」労働者の多くは、高度経済成長期までの最も「寄せ場」が拡大した時期に「寄せ場」へと流入してきた人々です。1990年代に入ると、各「寄せ場」で、「寄せ場」労働者の平均年齢は50歳をこえていきます。今後「寄せ場」が、どういった方向へと向かうのかは、1980年代後半からの日本の労働市場の変化、とりわけても不安定就労層の変化と外国人労働者の流入とを関連づけて、マクロ的な視点からの研究を必要としていると考えます。
