今年度の研究としては、まず紅野敏郎編『読売新聞文芸欄細目』(日外アソチエ-ツ)などを基礎資料として、「よみうり抄」(「読売新聞」文芸消息欄)の掲載時期及び日付けを確認し、それに基づいて、どのような方法でデータ・ベースを作成していくべきかという点を、これまで様々な雑誌の総目録を編集したことのある出版社の方々と討議することから開始した。そのなかで、まず全国の各大学、国会図書館、近代文学館などに所蔵されたいるマイクロ・フィルムのうち、最も安価で確実に記事を収集できるものをリストアップし、椙山女学園大学の松田良一教授に協力を依頼することになった。具体的には、来年度以降、学生アルバイトを利用して資料収集を進めていくことになった次第である。また、それと同時進行するかたちで、記事をインプットするためのフォーマットも、より利用しやすいものに修正した。この間、マイクロ・フィルムを収集するために何度となく山口〜東京間を往復し、国会図書館に通いながら調査にあたったため、数字のうえでは予算の大半が交通費で使用されることになってしまったが、すべて個人の手作業で進めてきたことなので、その点については致し方ないと考えている。なお、「よみうり抄」を読み進めていくなかで、周辺的なところから様々な問題点、研究課題が見つかり、現在、それを原稿あるいは講義テーマとして用意しているので、その内容をいくつか報告しておきたい。I 明治改暦(明治6年1月1日)以来、日曜日、祝祭日、学校の長期休暇などをはじめとした制度的な休暇が明確になったことによって、近代人の生活様式や価値観、思想、文化などが大きく変化した。作家、文化人の「消息欄」を調査していくということは、ある意味で、近代における<休息>というものの様相や変化をたどることでもあり、そこからは、例えば、高等遊民、旅行者のまなざし、都市の娯楽など、文学と深くつながる要素が逆照射できるはずである。II 自己告白的な小説世界に傾きつつあった自然主義の作家たちは、作家の「消息欄」が伝える諸情報と自分たちの創作世界との間に奇妙な癒着構造を感じていた。読者たちは作家たちの消息を知ったうえで、そこから推測される出来事を小説に期待するわけだし、作家たちもそれを計算したうえで様々な場面や状況を描写するわけだから、そこには、しばしば、「消息欄」を媒体として事実と虚構が複雑に交錯するような光景が生じていたのである。プライバシーの問題、モデル論議などは、その一例であろう。「よみうり抄」を研究していくなかで、今後は、そうした観点からの分析も試みていきたいと考えている。
