1 本研究は、イギリス・ルネサンスの演劇における植民地主義言説に焦点を当て、ポストコロニアル理論を援用することによって、演劇の孕む政治性について社会史的・文化史的な観点から考察することを目的としている。今年度は、特にウィリアム・シェイクスピアの『オセロ-』に焦点を当てた。この劇におけるヴェニス表象は、従来何の問題もなく、同時代のロンドンの表象に翻訳可能だと考えられてきたが、イア-ゴ-というキャラクターがスペイン性を孕むことを考慮に入れると、一見しただけでは都市の問題に見えるものの背後に、当時のイングランドにとって植民地獲得競争においてライヴァルであったスペインに対する意識が潜在しているを確認できるようになった。この成果については、1996年4月に行われる第6回国際シェイクスピア学会の研究発表部門において、“Beyond the Politics of Heterogeneity?:Teaching Othello in Japan"として発表した後、国内外の論文集に寄稿する予定である。2 また、ポストコロニアル理論では、初期近代のヨーロッパにおけるロンドンやベニスといったメトロポリスのローカルなレヴェルの問題を、近代世界システムというグローバルな問題へと読解しなおす場合に、現代の日本における英文学研究者としてどのような主体的ポジションを取りうるのかということが問題になる。日本の英文学制度内部におけるポストコロニアル批評の可能性については、1995年夏に、エセックス大学のPeter Hulmeを招聘して行った、「他者表象研究会」のセミナーにおいて発表した。また、『オセロ-』のヴェニス表象との比較のために、トマス・ミドルトンのロンドン表象のイデオロギー性を分析し、この結果は、1995年度の日本シェイクスピア学会のセミナー「トマス・ミドルトンをめぐって」で発表した。

1. This study focuses on the development of social history and cultural history, and aims to explore the development of social history and cultural history. In the summer of 1995, Peter Hulme of the University of Japan was recruited to participate in the "Other Representation Research Association". The results of this analysis are in contrast to the original design of the Japanese Academy of Science in 1995.
