佐々木邦の処女作『いたずら小僧日記』(初出1907-1908)は、「無名氏」の作品を翻訳したものであると作者自身が述べているのにも拘わらず、その原作が不明だったため、実は佐々木邦自身の創作であって、処女作を世に問う際の方便として翻訳作品と称されたと考えられてきた。しかし本研究によって、『いたずら小僧日記』の原作が発見され、佐々木の明言どおり翻訳作品であることが解明された。佐々木邦が翻訳した原典は、アメリカの女流作家Metta Victoria VictorのA Bad Boy′s Diary(1880)という児童向け諧謔小説である。じっさいこの諸説は発表当時、著者の名前が伏せられて、まさに「無名氏」作だった。本研究ではこの稀覯書のテクストを使って、佐々木の訳文が比較検討される。原作と訳文を対照させてみると、『いたずら小僧日記』は翻訳作品であることが解明されたことによってその値打ちが減じるのではなく、逆に、翻訳作品であることが解明されたことによってその独自の文芸的価値を有することが明らかになった。たとえば英語にThe cat is out of the bag.(秘密が漏れた・ばれた)という慣用表現があるが、佐々木はその意味するところが分っていたにもかかわらず、この面白い表現を生かすためにわざと「猫がとうとう袋から飛びだした」と直訳してみせる。それだけではない。原作にこの表現が使われていないところでも、この慣用句の直訳を挿入してみせるのである。佐々木邦はこのように英語経由の言葉遊びを随所に使うことによって、『いたずら小僧日記』を新しいユーモア文学作品に仕立て上げたのである。
