『現観荘厳論』の如来蔵思想とのかかわりを見るうえで従来重視されてきたのは第一章第四項「種性」と第八章「法身」であった。しかし、如来蔵思想を前面から説いている『宝性論』とパラレルの偈が『現観荘厳論』にあることも以前から知られていた。それは第五章第21偈であるが、それが説かれるのは、尽智と無生智に関する論議の箇所の結論部分である。伝統的な意味での尽智と無生智は、煩悩が尽きたことの自覚と煩悩が再生しないことの確信とを指す。しかしハリバドラ註を参照する限り『現観荘厳論』では、煩悩は法界を自性とするから「尽きることがない」し「生ずることがない」と説明される。これを字義通りに解釈すれば、尽智の説明としては不適切であり、逆に一種の逆説的に解釈するとしても、無生智に対しては逆説として機能していないという問題がある。『現観荘厳論』の相当箇所と対応する『般若経』の本文では、「尽きることがなく生ずることがない」という述語を受ける主語は煩悩ではなく、般若波羅蜜である。他方、同所に対するニャオンの註では、「実有である煩悩が修行によって尽きることはなく自性として尽きていたのであり、また、勝義においては生ずることがない」ということを證得することが尽智、無生智であるとされる。以上、『般若経』『現観荘厳論』とハリバドラ註、ニャオン註のあいだの解釈の相違はおそらくそれぞれの空の概念の相違に基づくものと考えられるが、この点については今後さらに解析を進めたい。
