江戸時代の唐様の書に、中国書跡がどのような影響を与えたのか、その実態を考察するにあたり、本調査では 1黄檗僧の書と、2中国書法の影響が比較的顕著に認められる唐様の実作品そのものについて調査研究を行った。費隠・隠元・木庵・独立など黄檗僧の書については、京都萬福寺の所蔵品を主な調査対象とし、これに各美術館や個人の収蔵品を加え、種々のデータを収集した。特に作品本体や題跋だけでなはなく、落款印章の写真資料をも収集した。例えば隠元の場合、「源流」は隠元平生の書風を伝えると考えられる一方、木額や柱聯の類になると、総じて平正で渾厚な書風となり、書が鑑賞される場に応じて書風が使い分けられていたことが指摘される。このような表現の幅の広さは、真偽を論ずるに際して大きな障害となるが、落款印章の確かな資料は、真偽確定の補助資料となり得ると思われる。また東博に収蔵が確認された独立の自用印なども、時宜を見て広く公開されることが望ましい。中国書法の影響を受けた唐様の書作品については、書風や文献等から、晋・唐・宋・元・明等の各時代の書を標榜したと考えられる作品を取り上げこれを調査した。例えば江戸時代もっとも流行した明時代の書については、祝允明を指標した荻生徂徠、文徴明を学んだ細井広沢・三井親和・秋山玉山、あるいは董其昌を標榜した飯田百川・中井董堂らが挙られる。また当時の学書の一方法を伝えるものに、市河米庵の「臨天馬賦」や「折手本」等があり、当時舶載されていた法帖に基づいた学書の実例が見られ興味深い。これらの作品についても、落款印章の写真資料を収集した。
