本研究の目的は、人物の身長評価を行い,身長評価のために有効な手がかりを探索することにあった。手がかりは知覚像と記憶像において,類似した構造を持つのか,さらには異なった構造を持つのかを実験的に検討した.身長という大きさ評価を行うにあたって,本研究においては,人物のさまざまな身体部位間の比を,構造化された手がかりを考とた.身体部位間の比は,人物の体の形ととらえることが可能である.形変数が,知覚された大きさと,記憶された大きさ評価値に,どのような影響を及ぼしているのか.また形変数は,知覚像と記憶像ではどのような構造化が行われているかを調べた。まず男女13名づつを,黒い均等な背景条件のものと,正面,側面,背面から撮影した.それぞれの人物の身体部位21箇所を,マルチン法に準拠して計測した.この計測値から,身体各部位の比を求め形変数とした.知覚条件では,人物の画像を観察しながら,記憶条件においては,一度記憶した人物の顔だけを観察しながら,それぞれ人物の身長を評価した。形変数の解析を行う前に,人物の客観的身長と,評価された身長の関係について分析した.評価された身長が客観的な身長に完全に対応するならば,勾配は1になるはずである.知覚条件の身長評価の結果で,勾配がもっとも1に近かったのは,体の向きが側面の場合であった(勾配0.62,決定係数0.72).正面,背面の順で勾配が緩やかになった.この結果は記憶条件でも同様であった.人物の身長を客観的な評価できる体の向きは,顔がすべて見える正面ではなく,側面であった.身長評価に有効な形変数として,知覚,記憶ともに共通したのは「顔の大きさと背丈の比」変数であった.知覚像と記憶像では,手がかりの構造化が異なることが示唆された.
