「中国で発行された英字紙誌」の調査,整理と分析を行ってきた。日本国内の研究機関の所蔵調査のほか、スウェーデン・アカデミー(ストックホルム)や林語堂記念館(台北)等でも調査を行い、その成果については、「現代中国学会」ほかの場で報告した。1930年代に中国人作家として上海の英字紙誌発行に中心的な役割をはたした林語堂について、その位置付けがうかびあがってきた、と考えている。また、アメリカに留学した北京・清華大学の卒業生たちがこの分野に大きく関わっていることから、彼らの足跡・活動についても研究をはじめており、今後、他の研究者と合同で調査等を進めていくことにしている。新聞発行に関わる二次的資料の収集、アメリカでの復刊状況調査、研究論文収集には、主としてネットワークを利用した。また「メディア史研究会」に参加して、新聞研究・メディア史研究についての多大な示唆を得ることができた。今年度は以上のように研究を進めてきたが、これまで中国でも日本でも取り上げられずにきたテーマであるだけに、基礎的な調査をはじめた段階である。しかし英字紙誌には林語堂を代表とする清華大学関係者が深く関係しており、当時の文学・思想界を考える上で重要なテーマであることがますますはっきりしてきた。資料の収集は今後も継続して行い、データが一定量まとまったところで、随時公開していく予定である。特に、コンピューターネットワークを利用する形でのデータベース公開をめざして、データ収集と整理を続けていく。また今年度の成果をもとに、考察を進め、論文の執筆中である。近日中に発表したい。
