The purpose of the research is to clarify the existence of urbanization caused by the migration of mass population, the expansion of settlements, the specilization of industries and achievements cities.Urban water conservancy had a direct relationship with a city's development, ecological environment and even its existence. Many famous historical cities in China possessed particular styles and environment due to their excellent water resources plan and utilization. It makes a conclusion that a modern city plan should have basic water conservancy construction and water environment protection as important components.Looking back the history of the study, we will be able to grasp historical characteristics of socio economic structures in China by focusing on the organized water utilization.Yangzhou became a central place of government and economics in Jiangnan in the Sui and Tang dynasties by completion of the Grand Canal and by transportation of being an important intersecting South and West in China. However, throughout the period from the late Tang to the Song times, the large quantity of drift sands accumulated and the sand bank was changed into adjoining land. These conditions remarkably decreased canal's function. Therefore, the Grand Canal did not run through the City which led a New Canal to be used.Ningbo stands among three rivers, with densely-scattered lakes. The irrigation of the area provided many advantages, such as water supply, flood control, water transportation, and city defense, which contributed Ningbo's rapid development significantly.Chengdu was founded with the successes of flood control, flourished with the multi-purpose developments of hydraulic construction.Wuban was a strategic city in Yangtze river Valley. During the different periods of urban development, urban hydraulics presents different features. It's important issue to analyze the relationship between the exploration of water resources and urban economic development.
