平成10年度は、平成9年に発掘調査を実施した主体部及び周濠、墓道部分から出土した遺物の整理作業、資料分析、図面整理作業、関連資料調査、補足の発掘調査を実施した。出土遺物の整理作業では、出土したガラス小玉、管玉が一連の腕飾りであること、及び漆製品は靭の一部あること、性格不明の木製品が矢柄の先端部で、内部に鉄族の基部が残存していること、墳丘出土の土師器が大型の二重口縁壺であり、朱彩されており、底部は焼成前に穿孔されていることなどが判明した。現在接合作業が進行中である。靭については現在保存処理を続行中である。墓壙内から出土した微量の朱及びガラス小玉の成分については現在分析を依頼しており、成果を待っている。また、東西の粘土槨の床面の粘土を規則的に採取し、脂肪酸分析を依頼しており、その成果を待って、埋葬された遺体の位置を検討する予定である。関連資料の調査は、東北南部の前期古墳の資料調査および、資料分析に関する調査を実施し、大塚森古墳の位置づけを検討するための基礎資料を収集するとともに、資料の保存処理、分析に関わる情報を収集した。補足のための発堀調査は平成10年7月から8月にかけて実施し、粘土槨の下部の断ち割り調査及び墓道部分の調査を実施した。粘土槨の下部の調査では東西両方の粘土槨の下層に礫敷きの排水施設があることを確認するとともに粘土槨の構築順序を検討した。墓道の調査では新旧の通路状の遺構の内新しいものが墓道であり、古い方は埋葬依然の作業用通路と推定するにいたった。現在報告書刊行に向けての取りまとめ作業を続行中である。
