明治期の国語調査委員会(文部省)による全国的な口語法調査は、世界の学界活動としても先進的なものである。その報告である「口語法調査報告書」と方言分布地図としての「口語法分布図」は、当時の日本語の全国的実態資料として、極めて貴重なものである。その結果ははじめて東西方言の状況と境界線の存在を実証した。ところが「口語法調査報告書」と「口語法分布図」は十分に資料分析が行なわれているとは言いがたく、両者の間に見られる相違・矛盾については、全くといっていいほど研究されていない。そこでこの研究では「口語法調査報告書」を詳細に分析し、データベース化を実施する。分析を通じて幾多な新事実が発見された。データベースは資料として公開し、分析・研究編も別途刊行する。分析研究編の内容は以下の通り。第一章作業の概要。第二章地点の概要。第三章データベースの概要。第四章回答に見られる表記の問題。第五章地域別回答傾向。第六章「口語法分布図」との対照に関する諸問題。付録(1)作業分担者一覧、各項目凡例など。(2)「口語法調査報告書」序言、口語法分布図に関する注意及び分布図目録。(3)各府県口語法調査区域一覧。
