Since "molecular recognition" plays important roles in biomembrane transport, enzymatic reactions, and other biological processes, synthesis of specific receptors is one of the most exciting subjects in current chemistry. They offer excellent opportunities in investigating biological functions and developing supermolecular devices.Although many kinds of artificial receptors have been presented, their design and synthesis are "trial-and-error" exercises. We developed in this project non-empirical design and highly efficient synthesis of specific receptors as summarized below :(1)Computational Design of Cation-Specific Receptor : We optimized Na^+ ion-specific armed macrocycles by computational modeling.(2)Efficient Synthesis of Chiral Pyridine Podands : A combined synthesis with biocatalysts and organometallics offered a new series of chiral oligopyridine ligands in excellent yields.(3)One-Step Synthesis of Anion-Specific Receptors : A new type of macrocycle containing four pyridinium cations was readily prepared, which exhibited highly selective anion binding functions.
