本研究の目的は、漢字処理の大脳半球優位性に及ぼす利き手と性の要因の効果を実験神経心理学的観点から検証するところにあった。具体的には、(1)言語材料の変数(漢字の情動価:陽性、陰性、中性)、(2)提示視野の変数(左視野、右視野)、(3)被験者変数(利き手:右手利き、左手利き;性:男性、女性)を操作した2つの実験を行い、漢字処理、漢字の情動価処理の大脳半球機能差を利き手と性の観点から考察した。実験1では、「漢字の情動性処理の視野差に及ぼす利き手の効果」を検討した。実験計画は、漢字の情動性(情動漢字、非情動漢字)×視野(左視野、右視野)×利き手(右手利き、左手利き)の要因配置を用いた。被験者は、右手利きと左手利きの大学生をそれぞれ15人ずつ用いた。3チャンネル・タキストスコープに反応潜時記録装置(タイムプリンターTP-402)を接続した装置を用いた。視野分割提示された漢字の再認反応を求めた。その結果、正再認数において漢字の情動性×視野および利き手×視野の交互作用がみられた。前者は、非情動漢字で左半球が右半球より再認がよく、情動漢字で半球差のないことを示していた。後者は、右手利き者が左半球での再認がよく、左手利き者は半球差のないことを示していた。実験2では、「漢字の情動価処理の視野差に及ぼす性の効果」を検討した。実験計画は、漢字の情動面(陽性、陰性、中性)×視野(左視野、右視野)×性(男性、女性)の要因配置を用いた。被験者は、右手利きの男女大学生をそれぞれ13名ずつ用いた。装置と手続きは実験1と同じであった。その結果、正再認数において漢字の情動価×視野が有意であった。これは、左半球は漢字の情動価にかかわらずその処理が優れているが、右半球は陰性語の処理がその他の処理より優れていることを示していた。しかし、性による差はみられなかった。
