地域社会における住民のスポーツ活動に関する研究は、これまで体育社会学やスポーツ社会学の領域において数多くの研究成果が出されてきている。しかし、それらのほとんどが都市地域社会や農村地域社会を対象にしたものであり、漁村地域社会を対象とした研究は極めて少ないのが現状である。以上のことを踏まえ、平成5年度には、北海道における典型的な漁村地域である羅臼町を調査対象地域に選定し、漁村地域社会で生活する住民すべてを対象に生活の実態とスポーツに対する意識や活動実態をエクステンシブな調査方法で明らかにしてきた。そこでは、漁村地域住民の生活やスポーツに関するおおよその傾向や実態を捉えることはできたが、調査方法の限界からスポーツが漁村地域住民の生活にどのように位置づき、機能しているかを、スポーツを生活との関連で微細には明らかにはできなかった。そうした課題を明らかにするためには、インテンシブメソッドによる実態把握が重要であると考え、今回は、漁村地域を形成する中で重要な役割を担う漁民に焦点を当て、羅臼町に存在する異なる漁業形態すなわち、さし網漁業者、定置網漁業者、養殖漁業者に分類し、それぞれの漁業者の生活内容とスポーツの具体的様態を明らかにするためにインテンシブメソッドによる調査を実施した。調査の概要は以下のとおりである。1.対象地域の社会・経済的特性を調査した(特に水産関係の資料の収集と分析につとめた)。2.羅臼町の社会体育行政における漁民層への位置づけ(社会体育一般及び漁民を対象とした事業内容の分析)。3.漁民の生活とスポーツについては、事例をとうしてくわしく掘り下げ調査した。
