Survey of Pupils in Schools for the Blind and Special Classes for the Visually Impaired in Japan

The sixth quinquennial survey of visually impaired pupils in Japan took place in 1996. By using a questionnaire, data were collected from 4,537 pupils in schools for the blind and 233 pupils in special classes in mainstream schools about their additional impairments, visual acuities, eye conditions and educational media and aids, in order to explore the direction of educational provision for the pupils with visual impairment.A clear trend appears be tn a decrease in actual numbers of those pupils with no additional disabilities and an in nc rease of proportions of pupils with multiple disabilities in addition to their visual impairment. Similarly there is a significant change in educational settings and curriculum to cope with the changing needs of the populations.
