前方後円墳の造出しは古墳時代前期から萌芽している。しかし、その形態は不整形であり、定型化するのは前期末から中期に入ってからであり、後期にも存続している。本研究では、具体的に明らかな中期の造出しを中心にして、その出土遺物のあり方を検討した。発掘調査例が少ないこともあって、総合的な判断をするには至らなかったが、以下の点が整理できた。1、中期の造出しでは、円筒埴輪を方形に巡らして区画し、その中に家形埴輪を設置することから、この場所が極めて限定された神聖な空間として判断でき、生前の居住空間を再現している。2、家形埴輪の周辺には、土師器・須恵器の他、小型の非実用的な手捏ね土器を伴うことが多いことから、再現した神聖な居住空間において、供物等を設置した。3、使用された土器は、高杯類が多く、供物と対応している。4、須恵器出現以降は、必ず須恵器を伴う。それも、高杯・器台・甕の他、〓が含まれていることが多く、ミニチュア土器と共に、供膳形態を表わしている。5、造出しでの複数次の行為は確認できず、造営時の短期間の行為の可能性が強い。6、後期には遺物の量は凌駕するが、こうした形態が崩れて行くため、造出しの機能面と使用形態が変質した可能性があり、今後の検討課題としたい。
