National Language Reform Movement in Modern China

通过研究，笔者初步得出结论：近代中国的白话文运动与帝国时期的白话文运动有一定的延续性。这就是为什么中国的文字改革与现代西方国家或明治日本的文字改革有些不同，尽管两者在从帝国共同语的控制下解放自己的方式上是相似的。这种汉语写作的连续性给现代中国带来了从五四时期到20世纪30年代的“大国语”、“民族行事”之争的反复的语言改革运动。因此，在研究近代中国民族主义的性质时，重新思考语言改革与中国民族整合之间的复杂关系，显得尤为重要。

Through my research, I have reached a tentative conclusion that the vernacular style language movement (HAKUWA UNDO) of modrn Chine has some continuous dimensions to the imperial period. That is why China's language reform in writing are somewhat different from that of modern Western states or Meiji Japan, though both are similar in the way that these countries were to emancipate themselves from the control of the imperial common languages. This kind of continuity in writing Chinese brought to modern China the repeated language reform movements that called for the more vernacular style from the May-Fourth period to the vigorous argument concerning "dazhongyu"(TAISHUGO) and "minzuxingshi" (MINZOKU KEISHIKI) in 1930's. Therefore, it seems very important for me to reconsider the complicated relations between language reform and China's national integration when we study the nature of Chinese nationalism in the modern era.
