Genetic aberrations in lung cancer cells were examined using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) concerning the p53 and erbB2 gene loci. Deletions of the p53 locus were detected in 5/28(17.6%) and amplifications of the erbB2 locus were detected in 8/28(28.6%). Both aberrations were detectable even in stage I cases. We concluded that peripheral type small size lung cancers without regional lymph node metastases often carried genetic changes as early events. Accumulation of those mutations may develop malignant phenotype of the tumor. One of the advantages of FISH analyes is to get genetic information of lung cancers by needle biopsy preoperatively. FISH may contribute to select operation methods according to the grade of genetic aberrations.
