项目摘要

研究計画に則り今年度は石版画、油彩画、水彩画などの調査を行った。調査カ所は川越市立博物館、宮内庁、東京大学、長野県小諸市の萬屋、熊本県の熊本洋学教師館などである。総数で300点余りの作品を調査した。そのうち明治天皇に関する作品は200点ほどであった。時代的には明治10年代から30年代で、特に明治20年代の前半に作品が集中していた。調査し撮影した作品はその傾向に従って幾つかの項目に分類した。項目は1,明治天皇 2,子どもたち 3,明治の女性 4,明治の男性 5,歴史画 6,風景である。これらはファイルメーカーを使用してデータ及び画像をパソコンに取り込んだ。明治天皇に関する石版画はかなり多くあり、浮世絵系統の木版画のそれとは天皇の捉え方を異にしている。木版画では肖像画として制作される場合はほとんどないと言っていいほど少なく、画題は行幸とか、天皇が何かをしている図で全体の画面の一部として描かれる。石版画は天皇一人の肖像、皇后との組み合わせ、さらに大正天皇の生みの親柳原愛子が加わっている作もあって当時の時代感が表れていて興味深い。また、そこに皇太子が描かれる作、皇族も入った群像、そして明治政府の高官も登場した像もある。これらは何れも肖像画として捉えられている。このことが石版画の大きな特長であり他のジャンルにはない表現である。天皇の肖像画は全て写真を基にしてそれを展開している。一つには最初の御真影となった明治6年に内田九一が撮影した写真である。もう一つは明治21年キヨソネが制作したコンテ画を丸木利陽が撮影した写真が2度目の御真影となり最も知られた天皇の肖像である。石版画はこの二つを基本として容貌を変化させさまざまに展開していることが重要で、その分析を行った。
