项目摘要

明治以来、数多くの歴史文学の作品が書かれ、今日まで歴史文学についても論じられてきた。しかし近代における「歴史と文学」の問題は、森鴎外の歴史小説を起点にして、その内実としての事実と虚構をめぐり展開した。その論議の流れをとおして、歴史文学論は「歴史叙述と文学」に関わる論争、すなわち「昭和史」論争と、井上靖の「蒼き狼」をめぐる「歴史文学」論争を通過してきた。「昭和史」論争では歴史叙述と歴史の中の人間について、マルクス主義歴史学が批判の対象にはなったが、歴史文学そのものについての論議に発展することはなかった。そして「歴史文学」論争では、井上靖の「蒼き狼」をめぐる大岡昇平の批判が歴史文学論として最もカテゴリカルであり、その内容は本質的な問題を含んでいたが、この論争は当事者の間で二、三の応酬が交わされただけで、問題が質的に止揚されたとは言いがたいのである。しかし「歴史文学とは何か」という問題は、これまでの「昭和史」論争、「歴史文学」論争を経て、今日の司馬遼太郎の歴史小説を論ずることに集約されるのである。そして一方では司馬文学を国民文学としての歴史文学として位置づける論議があるとともに、他方では司馬遼太郎がその歴史小説を構成する独自の方法を「司馬史観」として歴史家の批判があるが、しかし司馬文学は単に歴史小説としてだけではなく、歴史評論・歴史紀行を含めて明快な歴史像をもった人間観の文学であり、歴史家の片々たる実証主義やイデオロギーによる公式的な批判では事は片づかないのであるしたがって「歴史研究と文学」の関係が改めて問われるとともに、「歴史文学とは何か」という問いに対して文学史の視野で解答を出すことが求められているのである。なお、歴史文学論年表と歴史文学作品年表を付した。
