1) The establishment of the rapid detection system of 2 types of influenza B virus strains. In the 1996/97 influenza season, 2 types of influenza B virus, B/Yamagata group strains and B/Victoria group stains, were isolated from the specimens of the patients. Since the standard serum was raised against a B/Yamagata group stain, B/Victoria group stains were not detected with the confirmatory diagnosis by the hemaggulutination inhibition (HI) test. We applied newly obtained monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) to a rapid diagnosis method, a PAP staining method. When anti-NP or anti-M Mabs were applied, both B/Victoria group and B/Yamagata group strains were detected equally well, and when specific anti-HA Mabs were applied, strains were clearly distinguishable.2) The establishment of the rapid detection system of hemagglutinin (HA) 5 subtype strains of influenza A virus. We immunized mice with A/Turkey/Ontario/7732/66 (H5N9) and obtained Mabs which recognize HA5 subtype strains specifically and broadly. By applying the Mabs to PAP staining method, we established the rapid diagnosis system of HA5 subtype strains.3) The establishment of the rapid detection system of HA1 subtype strains of influenza A virus. In 1999/2000 influenza season, there was an epidemic of AH1 strains in Osaka Prefecture after 4 years' absence. We are now establishing Mabs which specifically detect possible to compare the antigenicities of the strains at the next epidemics with that of the next epidemics.
