今年度は日本全国の縄文時代遺跡から出土した幼児人骨102個体に関して乳歯の歯冠計測(近遠心径・唇頬舌径)を行い、これらを5地域(北海道・東北・関東・中部・山陽)に分けて地域変異に関する分析を行った。更に、北部九州・山口の渡来系弥生人の幼児人骨73個体および吉母浜遺跡出土中世幼児人骨20個体の乳歯歯冠サイズとの比較を行った。北海道・東北地方出土人骨において計測項目によっては観察可能な例数が少ないものがあったため、平均値を比較するにとどめた。結果として次のような傾向が認められた。(1)本州においては、北の地域ほど歯冠サイズは小さい。(2)北海道の縄文人は、いくつかの計測項目を除き、本州の縄文人よりも歯冠サイズが大きくなる。(3)縄文人内の変異幅は、渡来系弥生人および中世人との変異幅に匹敵する大きさをもつ項目もある。この結果、従来用いてきた全国の縄文人の平均歯冠サイズよりも、東北地方の縄文人はやや小さめの歯冠をもつことが示されたため、岩手県大迫町アバクチ洞穴弥生幼児人骨の歯冠サイズは、より九州・山口の渡来系弥生人の大きさに近くなる。頭蓋、四肢骨においては残念ながら縄文時代幼児人骨についての地域差はいまだ資料の絶対数が少なく検討できないが、前年度までの研究で鼻根部の形態や、四肢のプロポーションの中に幼児段階からその特徴が出現することが確認されている。これらの結果を総合的に判断するとアバクチ洞穴弥生幼児人骨には一般に縄文時代幼児人骨には見られないような形質が確認され、渡来系弥生人の遺伝的影響を想定することも可能と思われる。
