Study on the Visualization of the Textual Psalter Illustration

We can find Medieval culture and thought at the text - image relationship of textual Psalter illustration.This research tried to look into the mechanism of visualization in the textual illustration of 17 Latin Psalters up to 1200. The research area is spread into the works of different date and place. We have seen how the Psalm verses chose images according to their circumstances. We did surveys on most of 17 Psalters and made up 'Tableaux synoptiques' of text and all illustrations. As a result, the 'literalism', such as the Utrecht Psalter's is also found out in the contemporary Stuttgart Psalter, whose visualization system is different from the Utrecht Psalter. The historiated initials of the St. Albans Psalter illustrate Psalm verse quite actively. However there are several examples where the illustration is away from text. Making fully illustrated Psalter is tough work. We understand that Psalm illustrations are edited for each purpose since the text - image relation is flexible.
