项目摘要

本研究では、同じ時代(幕末-明治期)の同じ村(下総国香取郡鏑木村)に存在した寄生地主(平山家)と手作地主(鏑木家)の生活の対比を、金銭出納帳などの分析を通して行った。具体的作業としては、平山家の「書出帳」・鏑木家の「金銭出納帳」及び「日記帳」(いずれも多数)の写真撮影・整理・分析を中心とし、併せて、食生活史の観点から近隣地域の醤油醸造家の史料調査、比較の意味で他地域の地主の生活史関係史料の調査をも行った。上記史料などを通してわかったことはまず、近世から近代にかけての農民の生活の変化は明治維新といった政治的画期よりもむしろ、日清戦争・日露戦争といった、近代に入ってからの国家的戦争の方が、豚肉や牛乳の購入など生活の近代化という意味で大きな画期となっていたらしいということである。そしてそれまでの生活の変化は、西洋化というよりは、購入する砂糖が黒砂糖から白砂糖に変化したり、屋根が茅葺きから瓦葺きに変化したりといった、日本的な枠内での生活の向上というべき変化であったということがわかった。すなわち近世から明治へと時代が変わってからの政治的・制度的変化、あるいは「文明開化」といったようなことは、一般農民の基本的な消費生活にはほとんど関係のないものだったと言えよう。ただ、階層間の違いをみると、寄生地主の生活の変化は、日本的な枠内での変化にせよ西洋化という意味での変化にせよ、村方地主の生活の変化より常に先んじていたということもまたわかった。
